Bihar passed a resolution demanded caste-based 2021 census

The Bihar state assembly unanimously passed a resolution demanding a caste-based census in 2021 on 27 February. The move comes after state assembly passed a resolution stating that the National Register of Citizens (NRC) is "not needed in Bihar".

Highlights:
♦ It also emphasized that the state will stick to 2010 proforma for National Population Register (NPR).
♦ The state will add only a new column for transgenders for the census.
♦ Bihar is the second assembly in the country that sought a caste-based census in 2021.
♦ On 8 January 2020, the Maharashtra assembly passed a resolution for caste-based census. The state emphasized that the need for a caste-based census is required in order to increase the percentage of SC/ST and OBC quotas which is currently capped at 5096 as per a Supreme Court verdict.
