What is Prokaryotic Cell? Know All about it.

Definition

A prokaryotic cell is a type of cell that does not have a true nucleus or membrane-bound organelles. Organisms within the domains Bacteria and Archaea are based on the prokaryotic cell, while all other forms of life are eukaryotic. However, organisms with prokaryotic cells are very abundant and make up much of Earth’s biomass.

Characteristics of Prokaryotic Cell

Prokaryotic cells have different characteristic features. The characteristics of the prokaryotic cells are mentioned below.

  1. They lack a nuclear membrane.

  2. Mitochondria, Golgi bodies, chloroplast, and lysosomes are absent.

  3. The genetic material is present on a single chromosome.

  4. The histone proteins, the important constituents of eukaryotic chromosomes, are lacking in them.

  5. The cell wall is made up of carbohydrates and amino acids.

  6. The plasma membrane acts as the mitochondrial membrane carrying respiratory enzymes.

  7. They divide asexually by binary fission. The sexual mode of reproduction involves conjugation.

Prokaryotic Cell Structure

A prokaryotic cell does not have a nuclear membrane. However, the genetic material is present in a region in the cytoplasm known as the nucleoid. They may be spherical, rod-shaped, or spiral. A prokaryotic cell structure is as follows:

  1. Capsule– It is an outer protective covering found in the bacterial cells, in addition to the cell wall. It helps in moisture retention, protects the cell when engulfed, and helps in the attachment of cells to nutrients and surfaces.

  2. Cell Wall– It is the outermost layer of the cell which gives shape to the cell.

  3. Cytoplasm– The cytoplasm is mainly composed of enzymes, salts, cell organelles and is a gel-like component.

  4. Cell Membrane– This layer surrounds the cytoplasm and regulates the entry and exit of substances in the cells.

  5. Pili– These are hair-like outgrowths that attach to the surface of other bacterial cells.

  6. Flagella– These are long structures in the form of a whip, that help in the locomotion of a cell.

  7. Ribosomes– These are involved in protein synthesis.

  8. Plasmids– Plasmids are non-chromosomal DNA structures. These are not involved in reproduction.

  9. Nucleoid Region– It is the region in the cytoplasm where the genetic material is present.

A prokaryotic cell lacks certain organelles like mitochondria, endoplasmic reticulum, and Golgi bodies.

Components of Prokaryotic Cells

The prokaryotic cells have four main components:

Plasma Membrane- It is an outer protective covering of phospholipid molecules which separates the cell from the surrounding environment.

Cytoplasm- It is a jelly-like substance present inside the cell. All the cell organelles are suspended in it.

DNA- It is the genetic material of the cell. All the prokaryotes possess a circular DNA. It directs what proteins the cell creates. It also regulates the actions of the cell.

Ribosomes- Protein synthesis occurs here.

Some prokaryotic cells possess cilia and flagella which helps in locomotion.

Reproduction in Prokaryotes

A prokaryote reproduces in two ways:

  • Asexually by binary fission

  • Sexually by conjugation

Binary Fission

  1. The DNA of an organism replicates and the new copies attach to the cell membrane.

  2. The cell wall starts increasing in size and starts moving inwards.

  3. A cell wall is then formed between each DNA, dividing the cell into two daughter cells.

Recombination

In this process, genes from one bacteria are transferred to the genome of other bacteria. It takes place in three ways-conjugation, transformation, transduction.

  • Conjugation is the process in which genes are transferred between two bacteria through a protein tube structure called a pilus.

  • Transformation is the mode of sexual reproduction in which the DNA from the surroundings is taken by the bacterial cell and incorporated in its DNA.

  • Transduction is the process in which the genetic material is transferred into the bacterial cell with the help of viruses. Bacteriophages are the virus that initiates the process.

What are mitochondria?

Mitochondria are often referred to as the powerhouses of the cell. They help turn the energy we take from food into energy that the cell can use. But, there is more to mitochondria than energy production.

Present in nearly all types of human cell, mitochondria are vital to our survival. They generate the majority of our adenosine triphosphate (ATP), the energy currency of the cell.

Mitochondria are also involved in other tasks, such as signaling between cells and cell death, otherwise known as apoptosis.

Mitochondria are small, often between 0.75 and 3 micrometers and are not visible under the microscope unless they are stained.

Unlike other organelles (miniature organs within the cell), they have two membranes, an outer one and an inner one. Each membrane has different functions.

Mitochondria are split into different compartments or regions, each of which carries out distinct roles.

Some of the major regions include the:

Outer membrane: Small molecules can pass freely through the outer membrane. This outer portion includes proteins called porins, which form channels that allow proteins to cross. The outer membrane also hosts a number of enzymes with a wide variety of functions.

Intermembrane space: This is the area between the inner and outer membranes.

Inner membrane: This membrane holds proteins that have several roles. Because there are no porins in the inner membrane, it is impermeable to most molecules. Molecules can only cross the inner membrane in special membrane transporters. The inner membrane is where most ATP is created.

Cristae: These are the folds of the inner membrane. They increase the surface area of the membrane, therefore increasing the space available for chemical reactions.

Matrix: This is the space within the inner membrane. Containing hundreds of enzymes, it is important in the production of ATP. Mitochondrial DNA is housed here (see below).

Different cell types have different numbers of mitochondria. For instance, mature red blood cells have none at all, whereas liver cells can have more than 2,000. Cells with a high demand for energy tend to have greater numbers of mitochondria. Around 40 percent of the cytoplasm in heart muscle cells is taken up by mitochondria.

Although mitochondria are often drawn as oval-shaped organelles, they are constantly dividing (fission) and bonding together (fusion). So, in reality, these organelles are linked together in ever-changing networks.

Also, in sperm cells, the mitochondria are spiraled in the midpiece and provide energy for tail motion.

Although the best-known role of mitochondria is energy production, they carry out other important tasks as well.

In fact, only about 3 percent of the genes needed to make a mitochondrion go into its energy production equipment. The vast majority are involved in other jobs that are specific to the cell type where they are found.

Below, we cover a few of the roles of the mitochondria:

Producing energy

ATP, a complex organic chemical found in all forms of life, is often referred to as the molecular unit of currency because it powers metabolic processes. Most ATP is produced in mitochondria through a series of reactions, known as the citric acid cycle or the Krebs cycle.

Energy production mostly takes place on the folds or cristae of the inner membrane.

Mitochondria convert chemical energy from the food we eat into an energy form that the cell can use. This process is called oxidative phosphorylation.

The Krebs cycle produces a chemical called NADH. NADH is used by enzymes embedded in the cristae to produce ATP. In molecules of ATP, energy is stored in the form of chemical bonds. When these chemical bonds are broken, the energy can be used.

Cell death

Cell death, also called apoptosis, is an essential part of life. As cells become old or broken, they are cleared away and destroyed. Mitochondria help decide which cells are destroyed.

Mitochondria release cytochrome C, which activates caspase, one of the chief enzymes involved in destroying cells during apoptosis.

Because certain diseases, such as cancer, involve a breakdown in normal apoptosis, mitochondria are thought to play a role in the disease.

Storing calcium

Calcium is vital for a number of cellular processes. For instance, releasing calcium back into a cell can initiate the release of a neurotransmitter from a nerve cell or hormones from endocrine cells. Calcium is also necessary for muscle function, fertilization, and blood clotting, among other things.

Because calcium is so critical, the cell regulates it tightly. Mitochondria play a part in this by quickly absorbing calcium ions and holding them until they are needed.

Other roles for calcium in the cell include regulating cellular metabolism, steroid synthesis, and hormone signaling.

Heat production

When we are cold, we shiver to keep warm. But the body can also generate heat in other ways, one of which is by using a tissue called brown fat.

During a process called proton leak

, mitochondria can generate heat. This is known as non-shivering thermogenesis. Brown fat is found at its highest levels in babies, when we are more susceptible to cold, and slowly levels reduce as we age.

Karnataka hijab row: Freedom of religion and attire

Recently, six students were banned from entering a college in Karnataka’s Udupi district for wearing a hijab. The issue throws up legal questions on reading the freedom of religion and whether the right to wear a hijab is constitutionally protected or not.

How is religious freedom protected under Indian Constitution?

Article 25(1) of the Constitution of India guarantees the freedom of conscience and the right freely to profess, practise and propagate religion. It is a right that guarantees negative liberty — which means that the state shall ensure that there is no interference or obstacle to exercising this freedom.

Limitations: Like all fundamental rights, the state can restrict the right for grounds of public order, decency, morality, health and other state interests.

Observations made by the Supreme Court in this matter:

Shirur Mutt case in 1954: The doctrine of “essentiality” was invented by the Supreme Court. The court held that the term “religion” will cover all rituals and practices “integral” to a religion, and took upon itself the responsibility of determining the essential and non-essential practices of a religion.

What are the court’s rulings on Hijab?

In Amna Bint Basheer v Central Board of Secondary Education (2016), the Kerala High Court held that the practice of wearing a hijab constitutes an essential religious practise but did not quash the dress code prescribed by CBSE. It rather provided additional safeguards, such as examining students wearing full sleeves when needed.

In Fathima Tasneem v State of Kerala (2018), Kerala HC held that collective rights of an institution would be given primacy over the individual rights of the petitioner. The case involved two girls who wanted to wear the headscarf. The school refused to allow the headscarf. However, the court dismissed the appeal as students were no more in the rolls of the respondent-School.

Recent Step-By-Step Developments on Hijab Row

HIJAB ROW BEGINS ON NEW YEAR DAY 2022

Muslim girl students of the state-run PU College in Karnataka's Udupi alleged on Saturday, January 1, 2022, that they were denied entry into the classroom for wearing hijab.

Allegedly, principal Rudra Gowda did not permit them to wear hijab in the classrooms. Gowda said the rule was being followed to ensure uniformity in classrooms.

SAFFRON SHAWLS EMERGE

On January 3, a section of college students in Karnataka's Koppa district wore saffron scarves protesting allegedly against allowing Muslim women to wear hijab inside the classroom.

The students of the government-run college in Balagadi village claimed that if hijab was allowed inside, then saffron scarves could be sported too.

MEETINGS, PROTEST TAKE PLACE OVER HIJAB ROW

On Wednesday, January 19, a meeting was conducted between students, parents, government officials and the school management of the state-run PU College in Karnataka's Udupi, with the aim of solving the issue of the Hijab row.

However, according to those who participated in the meeting, no conclusion was reached.

The very next day, the five girls began protesting outside the school. They held placards as a sign of protest against the decision not to allow them to attend classes while wearing hijabs.

K’TAKA GOVT SETS UP EXPERT PANEL TO SOLVE HIJAB ROW

On January 26, the Karnataka government set up an expert committee to resolve the issue involving hijabs inside classrooms. It was announced that all girls should adhere to uniform rules until the committee's recommendations came.

WRIT PLEA ON HIJAB ROW IN HIGH COURT

On January 31, a writ petition was filed in the Karnataka High Court by a Muslim girl student from Udupi seeking a declaration that wearing a hijab is a fundamental right.

The plea stated that the Indian constitution guarantees the Freedom of Conscience and the right to profess, practise and propagate religion.

HIJAB ROW SPILLS OVER TO SHIVAMOGGA DISTRICT

Another hijab row broke out at Bhadravati in Karnataka’s Shivamogga district on Wednesday, February 2. Students of Sir MV Government college protested against certain students wearing hijabs in the classroom.

HINDU GROUPS ‘FORCE’ BOYS TO WEAR SAFFRON SHAWLS

On February 4, allegations emerged that Hindu groups were ‘forcing’ boys to wear saffron shawls in pre-university college classrooms in Udupi.

According to reports, this incident took place even after Muslim girls in the college removed their hijabs before entering the campus. The principal, however, intervened in the matter to stop Hindu outfits from enforcing a ‘saffron shawl campaign’.

On the same day, Dravida Munnetra Kazhagan (DMK) MP Senthil Kumar, representing Tamil Nadu’s Dharmapuri constituency, raised the Karnataka hijab row in Parliament.

He sought to know why students wearing hijab were not allowed to attend classes. He urged the central government to take action in the matter.

CM BOMMAI HOLDS MEETING OVER HIJAB ROW

Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai on Saturday, February 5, held a meeting with Primary and Secondary Education Minister BC Nagesh and top government officials, regarding the government's stand on the ongoing hijab row.

On Tuesday, February 8, the Karnataka High Court will hear the petitions filed by five girls studying in a government Pre-university college in Udupi, questioning hijab restrictions in colleges.

TWO HELD FOR FLASHING KNIVES DURING HIJAB ROW IN UDUPI

At least two people were detained by police for flashing knives during the ongoing hijab-saffron shawl row in the Kundapur town of Udupi district in Karnataka on Friday, February 5.

GIRLS STAGE WALKOUT AFTER NOT BEING ALLOWED TO CLASSES WITH HIJAB

On Monday morning , February 7, three students wearing hijabs walked into Kalavara Varadaraj government College in Koteshwara town of Karnataka’s Udupi district.

Upon seeing this, other students began wearing saffron shawls as a sign of protest. The principal convinced them to not wear the saffron shawls and they entered. The principal asked the girls to remove their hijabs too.

Not willing to budge, the three girls with hijabs walked out of the college.

On the same day, in Mandya district, a large number of students in Mandya district of Karnataka turned up to college wearing saffron shawls and chanting ‘Jai Shri Ram’.
