International Mother Language Day is observed on 21 February

International Mother Language Day is observed on 21 February. The day is observed every year to promote linguistic and cultural diversity and multilingualism.

Theme:
The theme for 2020 International Mother Language Day is "Languages without borders". The theme aims to promote unity in diversity and international understanding, through multilingualism and multiculturalism.

Linguistic diversity:
Linguistic diversity is threatened as more languages disappear. 40% of the population does not have access to an education in a language they speak or understand. Mother tongue-based multilingual education should be made progress. Recently, there seems a growing understanding of its importance, especially in early schooling, and more commitment to its development in public life.

History:
In November 1999, the International Mother Language Day was designated by the General Conference of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). The day has been observed since February 2000. On 16 May 2007, as a measure to promote the preservation and protection of all languages used by peoples of the world, the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) proclaimed 2008 as the International Year of Languages. UNGA also named UNESCO to serve as the lead agency for the Year.
