Russia Ukraine war is adding one new chapter for students to understand the whole process. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on February 28, 2022, made an announcement about signing an application seeking membership of the European Union at 9:26 pm. Let's understand what it means for Ukraine.
The European Union (EU) acts as one union for all European countries who are its members. It acts like a single organisation with standardised system of law in terms of political and economic growth and included the free movement of people, goods, services, and capital within the internal market. Moreover, the organisation also looks into the matter of legislation in justice and home affairs. The European Union maintains common policies on trade, agriculture, fisheries, and regional development.
Out of the total 27 members, the EU has included 19 members under the monetary union established in 1999, coming into full force in 2002. All 19 members use the euro currency.

Inception of European Union
The United Kingdom, which had been a founding member of the EU, left the organization in 2020. The EU was created by the Maastricht Treaty, which entered into force on November 1, 1993. The EU was awarded the Nobel Prize for Peace in 2012, in recognition of the organization’s efforts to promote peace and democracy in Europe.

European Union consists of ministerial representatives from each member country. The council is operated by a president who rotates after every six months.

The European Union countries share common laws and security policies.
European Union member countries get community policies on development, education, public health, and consumer protection and an increased role in environmental protection, social and economic cohesion, and technological research.
This also gives the right to the member countries to get EU citizenship, giving them the right to vote and run a Parliament.
The second pillar of the European Union speaks about foreign and security policies. The members can adopt common defense policies. The implementation of these policies comes under the Western European Union, a security organization that includes many EU members.
The third pillar of European Union gives the free movement of people within the EU borders. This will give the member countries the benefits of national immigration, asylum, and residency policies.
