Sports Ban on Russia

Russia Sports Ban: FIFA and UEFA on February 28, 2022 suspended all Russian teams and clubs from participation in both FIFA and UEFA competitions until further notice. The decisions were taken by the Bureau of the FIFA Council and the Executive Committee of UEFA. This means that Russia, which hosted the FIFA World Cup in 2018 will no longer feature in this year’s edition in Qatar.

This comes after several European teams including England, Poland, Sweden and the Czech Republic refused to play against Russia in the World Cup 2022 playoffs. FIFA Council had earlier barred the Russian football team from participating under the name of 'Russia' and has also banned the Russian flag and anthem from all its matches.

FIFA and UEFA together released a statement saying, “Football is fully united here and in full solidarity with all the people affected in Ukraine. Both Presidents hope that the situation in Ukraine will improve significantly and rapidly so that football can again be a vector for unity and peace amongst people.”
