The main objective of the World Science Day for Peace and Development is:
♦ Promote national as well as international solidarity for shared science between countries
♦ Strengthen and raise public awareness of the role of science for peaceful and sustainable societies
♦ Renew commitment between the countries for the use of science for the benefit of societies
♦ Bring attention of the countries to the challenges faced by science in raising support for the scientific endeavour.
History:
World Science Day for Peace and Development day was established by UNESCO in 2001. The day was initiated with an aim to raise awareness of the benefits of science worldwide. World Science Day is an annual event celebrated all over the world to recall the commitment made at the UNESCO-International Council for Science (ICSU) World Conference on Science at Budapest in 1999. The day also aims to renew the national, and the international commitment to science for peace and development. The main objective of the day is to stress the responsible use of science for the benefit of society.
