Marathi to be made compulsory in schools

The Maharashtra state government passed the Maharashtra Compulsory Teaching and Learning of Marathi Language in Schools Bill, 2020. The bill makes Marathi a compulsory subject in all schools across boards, including the Indian Certificate of Secondary Education (ICSE), Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), IB and Cambridge, from the forthcoming academic year.

Bill provisions:
♦ As per the Bill, compulsory teaching of Marathi will be a condition for a school to register or obtain a NOC from the government.
♦ The bill will allow the state government to exempt a student or any class of students from any or all of its provisions.
♦ The state government aims to cover all classes in five years in 2020-21.
♦ Marathi will be compulsory for Class 1 in the primary and for Class 6 in the secondary section. The rule will be extended to the other grades progressively till it becomes compulsory up to Class 10 by 2024-25.
♦ Previously, in 2012, the state government asked schools to teach Marathi up to Class 8. It was not implemented so far.
