TO WHAT EXTENT DID THE FREEDOM MOVEMENT IN INDIA INFLUENCE THE LIBERATION MOVEMENT IN AFRICA. EXPLAIN.
TO WHAT EXTENT DID THE FREEDOM MOVEMENT IN INDIA INFLUENCE THE LIBERATION MOVEMENT IN AFRICA. EXPLAIN.
* After the second world war great changes were taking place in other parts of the world. Most important was European colonies in Asia demanded and got independence. But many of the African countries they looked at India as an example of what pollitically possible for their own countries after India got independence.
* Mainly Gandhiji's Satyagraha in South Africa, independence struggle in India and Martin Luther king movement against racisam in U.S. and non violent revolutions for freedom in Africa were responsible for overthrow the corrupt dictators.
* Gandhiji's guided them until he was assassinated on Jan 30, 1948. The Indian government complained to U.N. about this issue. Nelson Mandela and other young leaders in the African community to organise mass action against racist rule. In 1952, the African National Congress and the South African indian Congress launched the "Defiance of unjust law" campaign, more than 8000 people went to prison.
* The Government resorted to discriminate arresrs, torture and long terms of imprisonment to suppress movement. But in the late 1940s and early 1950s, new mass based political parties were formed allmost every African colony. They got support from the masses and end the discrimination. After the end of discrimination, the central demand of African countries was for political freedom, for end of colonial rule. Colonial masters eventually responded to the demand for independence.
* Libya (1951) and Egypt 1952 were the first African nations to gain independence. Ghana was the first country south of the Sahara(1957)
