National Forest Martyrs Day was established to commemorate the Khejarli massacre of 1730. During this tragic event, Amrita Devi Bishnoi and over 350 members of the Bishnoi community laid down their lives to protect the Khejri trees. They opposed the orders of Maharaja Abhay Singh, who had instructed his men to cut down trees to construct his palace. This brave sacrifice has become a symbol of resistance and the spirit of environmental conservation in India.
The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change officially declared September 11th as National Forest Martyrs Day in 2013 to honor the legacy of those who gave their lives for the protection of forests and wildlife.
