What is AFCAT?
AFCAT stands for Air Force Common Admission Test and is also referred to as the Indian Air Force Exam. AFCAT is a national level competitive exam conducted by the Indian Air Force (IAF) to select officers for all its branches, except for the medical and dental branches. The AFCAT is conducted twice every year, once in February, and the other time in August. The IAF recruits its officers broadly under three branches, they are, the Flying Branch, the Technical Branch, and the Ground Duty Branch.
The Flying Branch consists of Fighters, Transports, and Helicopters. The Technical Branch deals with the Mechanical and Electronic aspects, while the Ground Duty Branch comprises of Administration, Accounts, Logistics, Education and Meteorology.

How Many Candidates Appear for AFCAT Every Year?
Every year around 2 lakh candidates appear for the AFCAT. On an average 10,000 candidates make it past the AFCAT cut-offs for every season’s recruitment. For AFCAT 1 2016, more than 11,700 candidates scored above the cut-offs, whereas over 10,400 candidates cleared cut-offs for the AFCAT 1 2015. After the candidates make it through the cut-offs, there is no restriction on the number of candidates that will be called for testing.
After successfully completing the training period, the newly Commissioned Flying Officers will be entitled to an approximate gross monthly salary depending on the branch that the candidate works for. The average salary for the Flying Branch is Rs.82,050, the Technical Branch is Rs.71,550, and the Ground Duty Branch is Rs.68,550.
General Term and Conditions
There are two types of commissions under which a candidate can apply for the Indian Air Force, the Permanent Commission, and the Short Service Commission (SSC). The Permanent Commission refers to a career in the Indian Air Force until retirement. The short service commission means a limited period career in the IAF. The term for the SSC is 14 years, and it will not be extended upon completion. By writing the AFCAT, one can join either the Permanent Commission or the Short Service Commission of the IAF.
Eligibility for Air Force Common Admission Test
The following criteria are applicable for both male and female candidates who are appearing for the AFCAT.

Age - Flying Branch: 20 to 24 years at the time of commencement. If the candidate has a valid and current Commercial Pilot Licence issued by the DGCA of India, the age limit is relaxed up to 26 years.
Technical Branch and Ground Duty Branch: 20-26 years at the time of commencement.
Nationality - Indian
Marital Status - Unmarried
Educational Qualification - Candidates who have completed a three-year or four-year course in any discipline from a recognized University with a minimum of 60% marks. The candidate should have studied Physics and Mathematics at 10+2 level.
Students who are in their final year are also eligible to apply, as long as they do not have any backlog at the time of the Testing and produce their Degree certificate issued by the University before the stipulated date in the advertisement.
AFCAT Syllabus 2016
The AFCAT syllabus can broadly be divided into four topics, they are, General Awareness, Verbal Ability in English, Numerical Ability, and Reasoning & Military Aptitude Test. These topics are further divided into sub-topics. The table below contains the AFCAT syllabus

Pattern
The AFCAT Question Paper consists of 100 questions and the time duration is 2 hours. Each of these questions carries 3 marks. The exam includes negative marking. For every wrong answer, the candidate loses 1 mark. The table below clearly explains the pattern of the AFCAT.

The EKT test will commence immediately after the AFCAT comes to an end. The duration of the EKT is 45 minutes. Only those candidates who have opted to work in the Technical Branch will have to write the EKT.
