United Nations (UN) Secretary General Antonio Guterres has appealed to India not to send Rohingya refugees back to their countries of origin.
In an exclusive interview to India Today TV, the UN secretary general said, "We appeal to India first of all to receive Rohingya refugees fleeing and second not to send refugees back to their countries of origin where they might still face persecution against their will."
Speaking to India Today Group Editorial Director Raj Chengappa on India’s approach towards Rohingyas, Antonio Guterres said there are tens of thousands of Rohingyas who have come to India. "I think India can play a very important role because India is a friend of Bangladesh
[and] India is a friend of Myanmar."
Antonio Guterres was replying to Raj Chengappa’s question whether he spoke [with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi] about the Rohingya issue.
Chengappa said, "In your previous job, you did an excellent job in terms of refuges. India’s stand has been that it has closed its doors to the Rohingya refugees because they believe they are a security threat it could spawn terrorism. What is your view about India’s approach?"
Antonio Guterres said there are tens of thousands of Rohingya refugees in India. He said it was necessary to create conditions for the problem to be effectively addressed. Myanmar should make massive investment that is necessary for physical reconstruction and the reconciliation to allow for the return of the Rohingya refugees.
